From Not Feeling Enough to Feeling Loved

Love and more love

Last Friday was my daughter’s 18th birthday and instead of celebrating we got into a huge argument.  It triggered all my fears of not being good enough and not being capable of raising a child.  I felt disrespected and unappreciated.  In short, I felt like a failure.

Thankfully with the support of my husband and her stepmom the next day we were able to sit down, have an open and honest – albeit difficult – conversation, and we came up with some new agreements to move forward.  It was productive and successful.  Everyone felt better, lighter and relieved to have made it through without scratching each other’s eyes out.

So after everything was wrapped up I was able to keep my plans to have a sleepover at a girlfriend’s house.  We enjoyed yummy food, authentic conversation, and great music.  It was fantastic to have a little bit of time off from the heart-wrenching happenings on the home front.

On the drive home I shared with my girlfriend how I’ve always felt like I fall short of the ideal nurturing mother.  I see other moms who can love and embrace their children with such an open heart.  I want to be that kind of mom and I consistently feel like I’m not that.  As if there is something wrong with me.

During the course of the conversation, my girlfriend asked me something like, “Has it always been this challenging with your daughter?  Or is this something new?”

I immediately began telling her how traumatic and dramatic our relationship has always been – right down to the pregnancy.  I hated being pregnant.  It was 9 months of pms-ing.  Then she was almost 2 weeks overdue and I was ginormous.  I was more than 200 pounds and my body didn’t even feel like mine anymore.  Then while giving birth – which was actually my favorite part of being pregnant – the umbilical cord was wrapped 3 times around her neck.  The doctor had to cut it off while she was still in the birth canal and the medical staff had to thump her 9 pound 9 ounce body to get the oxygen flowing.  Then we found out she had congenital hypothyroidism, which left untreated in newborns will lead to mental & physical retardation.  Then when she was about a month old I had a grand mal seizure and was hospitalized.  Within one month’s time we both had had life threatening experiences.  Yeah, I would say the trauma and drama has been intense right from the start.

But then, the coolest thing happened.  I heard God whisper in my ear, “You see how challenging this experience has been for you?  Can you give yourself a break now?”

My heart began to soften and I heard, “Can you give yourself credit for having made it through all of it?”

More softening, “Can you let yourself be good enough?”

And in that moment all the masks and barriers I had put up to hide from not feeling good enough came tumbling down.  My heart filled with compassion and I leaned into the warm, understanding and loving presence of God.  I stopped resisting the past, my daughter and myself.  I stopped judging the trauma and drama.  I simply let myself be embraced, loved and nurtured for who I am right now and everything I have ever been.

It was an amazing moment of transformation as my “not-nurturing-enough” story melted into an extraordinary experience of love.

Forget About Doing a Good Job

Capture the darkness to see the light“Capture the darkness to see the light”

c: hi god

g: hi cassandra

c: how are you today?

g: peachy. how are you?

c: hopeful. i really want to do a good job with the book

g: is that a desire that’s going to get in your way?

c: well maybe a little.  it does feel super important

g: what’s more important creating the book or wanting to do a good job?

c: creating it of course!

g: then you are free from wanting to do a good job – you don’t need to do a good job.  you simply get to do a job.  gather blank paper and a folder or a binder and get started.  you already have the first few pages written in your head.  it doesn’t matter how you organize any of it right now.  it’s organic.

c: oh! and I can print out pages with photos on them and use them to write on!

g: that’s an excellent idea if it inspires you.  don’t forget you are transcribing.

c: yes, transcribing.  directly from my soul.

g: yes, which is my portal to you – it’s how we connect

c: yes, thank you!  off I go now…

The Shack: an incredible novel offering a new perspective on God, religion & the church

You know that I love to post about God and spirituality. Well, if you like these topics too, then you absolutely must read The Shack by William P. Young.  It offers an incredibly unique perspective about God, religion, and our relationships with both.  Plus, it’s literary!  It’s very well-written and the story is super intriguing – it’s about a father who’s daughter has been brutally murdered.  Don’t worry I didn’t give anything away!  The reader knows up front about the daughter, but it’s still a mysterious read.  You’ve gotta read this book…in fact, even if you don’t believe in God.  No wait, especially if you don’t believe in God!

For those of you who are regulars here, then you know that I’ve grappled with Christianity a lot in my lifetime.  Well, this book has inspired me to look at Christianity in a whole new light and believe me, that is huge!

Here, I’ll make it real easy for you to buy the book on-line.  Here’s a direct link to it on Amazon.com:

Happy Reading!

Who is God to you?

Oh my goodness!  This morning’s Active Meditation was incredible!  All of this information about humanity, how we are created, and how to sort it all out simply poured out of me.  I am seriously blown away by the insights I’m receiving.

How are you receiving these insights?

Well, it begins by opening up to it.  And the opening up is based on believing that it’s available.

Oh that’s interesting. Where does it come from?

Well, in my particular belief system it comes from God.  You could also say that it comes from the Universe, Spirit, the Divine, etc.

Who is God to you?

Oh I’m not ready to answer that question!

Why not?

Because I haven’t figured it all out yet.

Well, would you be willing to share what you have figured out?

I still feel a bit hesitant, but I guess I could.  God is the father (and mother) of all religions.  He takes on many forms so that he can connect with everyone.  Different people have different ways of connecting so he makes himself available to everyone.

You paused.

Yeah, I guess I’m feeling like that’s all I want to share right now.

You guess? Or you know?

I know.

Well, thank you for sharing.  And it does bring up an interesting topic that I would like to throw out there for others to comment on:

Who is God to you?

God, what’s up with the human need to be productive?

Each morning I check in with God through Active Meditation.  It begins with my Daily Journaling Practice, walking my dog, stretching out, working out for 35 minutes, and then I sit down and type out my conversation with God.  It’s a powerful process and so I thought I would share with you yesterday’s notes:

Me: Good morning, God!

God: Good morning.

Me: I come to you today with an open heart and mind.  I don’t have an agenda or anything in particular in mind.

God: Sweet.

Me: So I’m here to check in with you.  What would you like me to focus on today?

God: I love how you are already focusing on joy.  I saw that you realized how much easier it was to work out {at the gym} when your mind and heart were filled with joy.

Me: yes, I loved it.  In fact, there were times when I thought, “This is supposed to be harder!” and then I just let it go and continued on with my easy workout.

God: Good for you.  It is important {for you to understand} that life was not designed to be hard and difficult.  It was designed to require hard work.  And yet, enjoyable work.  Work that is challenging and energizing all at the same time.

Me: oh I like that!  It takes some of the pressure off.  Speaking of pressure, what’s up with the human need to be productive all the time?

God: Ah yes, the need to be productive.  It’s more about panic as opposed to productivity isn’t it?

Me: yes!  Because I have noticed that it is easier to be productive when I don’t need to be productive.

God: yes!  That is the key.  Notice the difference between what you say is the driving force and what truly is the driving force.  This is where a lot of humans run into trouble in creating their lives.  They say one thing with their mouths and something different with their hearts.

Me: oh wow!  That’s insightful.  Thank you!

God: you’re welcome.

Me: okay, I need to go get ready for me day.

God: I thought that’s what we were doing!

Me: you’re funny, God!  I mean that I need to go shower and get ready for my next appointment.

God: well, thank you for making me one of your first appointments of the day!

Me: you’re welcome! Anything else you’d like to say before I sign off?

God: Nope. Be a joyful day!

Me: thank you.

God: you’re so very welcome.

It takes way less energy to bloom in your beautiful self!

Are you willing to look for something else?

Each morning I write a Vision Paragraph.  I wrote one recently that I’d like to share with you because when I went back to read it I was like, “Wow!  I wrote that? It inspires me!”  So here ya go:

I now fully allow myself to bloom beautifully.  Oh!  Like a rose.  God told me once that I am a rose.  It is so much easier to open up, bloom, and share my beauty with the world.  I didn’t realize how much energy I was draining in keeping myself tightly wound up.  I was protected from the outside, but I was hurting myself from the inside.  Well, I wisened up and with God’s gentle, guiding hands I blossomed!  Even my beauty surprises me.  Thank you, God, for creating me beyond my wildest expectations!

You are invited to write you own Vision Paragaph and to be surprised by your beauty.

Ladies, are you wearing your best spiritual bra?

Click play to listen to this post instead or download to listen on your MP3 player.

Yesterday I went to Victoria’s Secret for a bra fitting because honestly I’ve been wearing my daughter’s hand-me-downs for months now.  I’ve known for quite some time that I need new undergarments, but it wasn’t high on my list of priorities.  In fact, yesterday I went in only because an appointment got rescheduled and I found myself with an unexpected couple of hours at the mall.

So I went in, asked for help, got measured, and set up in the dressing room with 20 bras to try on.  I went through the first couple that were okay.  And then…I put on the Very Sexy Secret Embrace Push Up Bra and oh my heaven!  I was transformed in a younger, perkier woman!  Could this be me? Could those be my breasts?

Yes! It is me and those are my breasts.  This is what I look like with adequate support.  With this bra on I stood taller, smiled bigger (is that even possible?!), and embraced my femininity.  I floated through that store like the models you see in their commercials with big, beautiful wings.

And then it hit me: having a deep spiritual connection is the same as wearing an amazing bra!  I mean, think about it.  A good bra supports, protects, and encourages you to shine in your beautiful self.  You don’t need to go on a diet, lose 10 pounds, or change who you are to look and feel good right now.

This is exactly what is happening to me as I deepen my relationship with Life (aka God, Spirit, the Universe, etc).  And here’s what I really want you to know: my relationship with God comes through the quiet depths of my heart, mind, and body.  To me, spirituality is the place where all aspects of my being intersect.  It is the absolute center.  And as I process life, delve deeper into my heart, mind, and body, and discover my purpose I become closer to God.

Let’s just say that now my physical and spiritual bras are an awesome reflection of one another!  I encourage you to think about your own spiritual bra…

It should make you:

  • feel beautiful,
  • stand tall, and
  • embrace yourself exactly how you are.

It should:

  • lift you up,
  • protect you (even from yourself), and
  • add joy to your life.

If it doesn’t, then maybe it’s time to trade in the hand-me-downs and get a new spiritual undergarment.

If you don’t have any spiritual undergarments on at all, then maybe it’s time to make it a priority and invest in some.

This topic is near and dear to my heart.  I invite you to leave your comments, email me your insightful feedback, and even to schedule a complimentary coaching session.

Here’s to all of us beautiful women sporting amazing bras, both physically and spiritually!

Snuggle Up to Your Inner Knowing

Snuggle Up
“Snuggle Up”

Earlier this week I realized that I receive divine inspiration when I am quiet.  So I decided to make a list of activities that help me connect with inner knowing:

  1. Walk in nature
  2. Photography
  3. Painting
  4. Cleaning house
  5. Showering & getting ready
  6. Walking Gracie
  7. Meditation
  8. Journaling
  9. Classes, seminars, and conferences
  10. Meeting with clients
  11. Services @ Center for Spiritual Living
  12. Reading Cheri Huber books
  13. Running
  14. Connecting with other spirit minded people

So I’m really curious…what kinds of activities allow you to hear Life’s whispers nudging you towards your talents?
