Weekly Winners: my life in photos

There is some pretty cool stuff happening in the Creativity Room at my house…

Life & Death in my Creativity Room
It is a spider eating a bug. It happened like a yard from my meditation pillows and I thought it was so cool I just let them be…oh and I took photos!
Ew!

Even though I have a love/hate thing going on with our cat Poppy I did capture quite a few impressive photos of her. She’s very expressive and has these amazing green eyes:
Sheer Happiness
Pensive
Wuz up?

Can you guess what I did this past Saturday?

I am in the process of writing a book proposal & I’m curious:

Is living from your heart a woman thing?

Or are there men out there who also want to learn how to live a heart-centered life?

Please comment your honest thoughts, opinions, and insights.

Weekly Winners: My Sister Bren

I am visiting my sister Brenda and her family right now. And the truth is…the visit was prompted by a health care crisis.  Here is what Bren says:

“I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure…something that we as a family were not prepared for. I am working hard to better myself as well as listen to whatever my cardiologist says. We are all optimistic that my condition won’t worsen and in the next 3 months I become a person living with CHF not dying from CHF. Thank you to everyone who have sent their well wishes and prayers.”

So this week’s Weekly Winners is dedicated to my sister Brenda and her courage to transform her life and not only live, but THRIVE through congestive heart failure.

How are you living?

Last week I visited my sister her husband…

There is a Time and Place for Guns

and their daughter…

Allow Your Natural Beauty to Curl

…up in Oregon.  They live off the grid, which means that they are self sufficient in every way imaginable.  They create their own energy, tap into a well for water, and they even dump their own trash.  Yup, no garbage men off the grid.  Thank goodness for cell phones, satellite tellie and internet; otherwise, they’d not only be off grid but out of their minds!

It was so nice to simply hang out with my sis, her hubs, and their 2 year old daughter.  We’ve been building a new relationship over the last couple of years and it was great to reap the benefits.  We went shopping, swimming in the river, watched movies, and I even helped my sis set up Google Analytics and Feedburner.  Yeah, there were a few tense moments, but they weren’t weighted down with old hurts and unresolved arguments.  They were simply tense moments in a 2 bedroom cabin housing 6 people in 110 degree weather (yes, there was a record breaking heat wave during our visit!)  Those moments came and went as quickly as the air rushing through the 6 fans we had running 24/7.

Anyhow, I thought my visit would be a nice break from all of life’s stresses.  But, now that I’ve been back for awhile I realize that there are just as much stresses living off the grid as on…they are just different.  I worried about using too much power so I continually turned lights off.  I stressed about the water line breaking again and tried to hold me pee as long as possible.  I tried to drink less water despite the heat because all drinking water has to be brought in.  And worst of all, I scrutinized every step outside for fear of accidentally stepping on a rattlesnake:

Choose to Walk Away from Danger

As you can imagine, my sister has struggled in the transition to life off the grid ~ she’s a huge bug-o-phobe! ~ and after experiencing it first-hand even I thought I would want them to move back to Barrow, Alaska.  But, strangely enough, I don’t.

Because it’s not about where they are.  It’s about how they are.

I want them to create their best life.  I want them to feel safe, secure, and fulfilled.  I don’t care if that’s in the Oregon backwoods, the arctic tundra, or even as missionaries in South Africa.

We differ in so many ways, but one thing will always remain true and indisputable: I love my big sister and her family.  I support them if they decide to stay off the grid or not.

What’s your 2009 theme? And how are you living it?

DSC_0114

Harmony is my 2009 theme.  Instead of making New Year’s Resolutions I picked a theme to help guide me through my year.  I love my theme so much that I think of it often and whenever I see the word I pause and pay special tribute to it.

The photo above was taken at the Center for Spiritual Living Women’s Retreat I went on a week ago.  I had a beautiful time and it was an amazing experience.

One of the most powerful ways I’ve incorporated harmony into my life is when I’m driving.  You see, it’s really easy for me to road rage.  I know surprising isn’t it?! But, true.  I’m often in a hurry with little to no patience for slow or idiotic drivers.  Lately I’ve been asking myself, “How can I bring harmony to our roadways?” and I do live in a densely populated area.  One of the ways I’ve began to live it is by saying out loud while I’m driving:

I am love.

I am loved.

I am loving.

It has really helped me find harmony in my travel time because it is impossible to road rage when you are full of love and allow it to flow through you.  I know it’s made a difference in my life and I trust that it’s also made a difference in the lives of the people on the road with me.

Please do leave me a comment and let me know what you 2009 theme is and how you are living it.

God, what’s up with the human need to be productive?

Each morning I check in with God through Active Meditation.  It begins with my Daily Journaling Practice, walking my dog, stretching out, working out for 35 minutes, and then I sit down and type out my conversation with God.  It’s a powerful process and so I thought I would share with you yesterday’s notes:

Me: Good morning, God!

God: Good morning.

Me: I come to you today with an open heart and mind.  I don’t have an agenda or anything in particular in mind.

God: Sweet.

Me: So I’m here to check in with you.  What would you like me to focus on today?

God: I love how you are already focusing on joy.  I saw that you realized how much easier it was to work out {at the gym} when your mind and heart were filled with joy.

Me: yes, I loved it.  In fact, there were times when I thought, “This is supposed to be harder!” and then I just let it go and continued on with my easy workout.

God: Good for you.  It is important {for you to understand} that life was not designed to be hard and difficult.  It was designed to require hard work.  And yet, enjoyable work.  Work that is challenging and energizing all at the same time.

Me: oh I like that!  It takes some of the pressure off.  Speaking of pressure, what’s up with the human need to be productive all the time?

God: Ah yes, the need to be productive.  It’s more about panic as opposed to productivity isn’t it?

Me: yes!  Because I have noticed that it is easier to be productive when I don’t need to be productive.

God: yes!  That is the key.  Notice the difference between what you say is the driving force and what truly is the driving force.  This is where a lot of humans run into trouble in creating their lives.  They say one thing with their mouths and something different with their hearts.

Me: oh wow!  That’s insightful.  Thank you!

God: you’re welcome.

Me: okay, I need to go get ready for me day.

God: I thought that’s what we were doing!

Me: you’re funny, God!  I mean that I need to go shower and get ready for my next appointment.

God: well, thank you for making me one of your first appointments of the day!

Me: you’re welcome! Anything else you’d like to say before I sign off?

God: Nope. Be a joyful day!

Me: thank you.

God: you’re so very welcome.

4 Simple Steps to a Better Mood

{Isn’t it so cool that you can listen to this post instead of read it?!}

Previously I shared how life amplifies us – even when we’re in a bad mood.

Now this doesn’t mean you can never be in a bad mood – we are only human by the way – but, if life is always sending you what you’re putting out there, then what the heck should you do when you’re in a bad mood?

You know, one of the simplest and most effective things I do when I’m in a bad mood is to just stop whatever it is I’m doing and say out loud, “I’m in a bad mood.”  There’s something about claiming the truth in the moment that releases the judgment of the bad mood, which allows it to begin to dissipate.  I mean, really stop and think about it: which is worse, being in a bad mood or beating yourself up for being in a bad mood?

The next thing I do is consider my options for what to do next.  Usually a bad mood is the result of an unmet need like not getting enough rest.  So instead of continuing on with what you were doing, what can you do instead? And 9 times out of 10, you really can put something off, switch directions, and come back to it later.  Even if you still choose to go ahead with what you were doing initially, I find that it always helps to stop and give myself permission to make a different decision.

Finally, be mindful.  This is so important in life in general and especially when you’re in a bad mood.  Ask yourself the tough questions: Is this the best time to call your mom? Do you absolutely have to go to the grocery store right now? Or can it wait? Is there someone you can ask to help out? Maybe the best thing for everyone in your life is for you to take a nap? Seriously, choose wisely and everyone benefits – even if that means you are canceling plans with someone.

The bottom line is when you nurture yourself through a bad mood, life amplifies love!  And isn’t that exactly what you need when life sucks?! So whenever you find yourself in a bad mood:

  1. Pause it,
  2. Claim it,
  3. Consider it, and
  4. Choose wisely.

Believe me, your bad moods and your friends will thank you for it!

Snuggle Up to Your Inner Knowing

Snuggle Up
“Snuggle Up”

Earlier this week I realized that I receive divine inspiration when I am quiet.  So I decided to make a list of activities that help me connect with inner knowing:

  1. Walk in nature
  2. Photography
  3. Painting
  4. Cleaning house
  5. Showering & getting ready
  6. Walking Gracie
  7. Meditation
  8. Journaling
  9. Classes, seminars, and conferences
  10. Meeting with clients
  11. Services @ Center for Spiritual Living
  12. Reading Cheri Huber books
  13. Running
  14. Connecting with other spirit minded people

So I’m really curious…what kinds of activities allow you to hear Life’s whispers nudging you towards your talents?
