100 Things I Fear: what will people think of me?

Filed under 100 Things I Fear

62. {11/22/09} Went to a Pampered Chef party and didn’t buy anything. I felt like I was supposed to, but our kitchen is still a mess during remodel and we have way too much stuff.  I do not need to bring in more stuff.

Do you feel the pressure to be productive at work?

One of the things that The Hubs and I talk about a lot is the pressure to be productive at work.  There seems to be this incessant need to prove our value by a myriad of things: projects completed, deadlines met, hours worked, hours billed, jokes told, ideas presented, etc.  And yet, what if I told you that it was this need to prove, this pressure to be productive, that was actually keeping your productivity down?

It’s true.  Because productivity isn’t a product of pressure.  Nope.  It’s a product of intention, which is how you approach a job.  It’s where you’re coming from.  And from what I’ve learned, the lighter you approach a job (i.e. the less pressure), the more you can accomplish.  It’s one of the Universe’s cosmic jokes: when you stop trying to prove your worth, you discover your value.  And it’s not that it wasn’t there all along.  It’s just that you couldn’t see it – or more importantly – you couldn’t feel it.

So if you really want to increase your productivity at work, then stop pressuring yourself and start trusting that how you are is just as important as what you are.

If this topic speaks to your heart (or your pressure :~), then I invite you to check out this coaching call I’ve got coming up in September. Click here to see the invitation on SimplyFearless.com

Permission or Pressure: Which one do you choose?

Soften Up“Soften Up”

During this morning’s conversation with God I asked him why he was always so accepting of me and giving me permission to feel how I feel no matter how much I don’t like how I feel and he didn’t even have to answer me directly.  In my frustration about his acceptance – can you believe I was frustrated by being accepted?! – I was venting about it and realized that if he scolded me for where I was at and told me that I have to do x, y, or z, that then I would totally rebel against him.

It was such an eye opener and all of a sudden I had a deeper understanding why giving myself permission is so much more powerful than pressuring myself into moving forward.

You see, I tend to do that: pressure myself relentlessly.

But, whenever I’m connecting with God he doesn’t do that to me.  Instead he continually tells me, “That’s okay.”  Even when I’m like, “I feel like such a failure!” he always responds with, “That’s okay.”

And this morning I was fed up.  I asked, “How is that okay? How is it okay that I feel uninspired? Can’t you just force me to stay inspired?”

And that’s when it hit me!  It really wouldn’t work if God continually told me that I’m not okay and forced me to take action.

So, if God is smart enough to know that force doesn’t work, then why am I continually trying to force myself?

You know, it’s such a human thing to force and try.  That’s really not what I should focus on here.  It would be way more powerful for me to make a commitment to follow God’s lead, give myself permission, and embrace myself along the way.

So today as I begin my day I am willing to commit to notice whenever I’m pressuring myself, to let it go, and to give myself permission to be where I’m at.  And you know what? I feel more inspired now than I have in weeks!

What about you? Which path will you choose? Pressuring yourself into action? Or accepting yourself into it? I’d love to hear your take.  Please post your thoughts, fears, and insights.

Practice The Art of Not Knowing

This morning during my Active Meditation I learned about The Art of Not Knowing.  It came up because I realized two things about where I was at:

  1. I need to do everything all the time
  2. I have to understand everything all the time

Then I was gently reminded how much pressure these two things put on me and I realized that I always tell others that it’s not why it’s how.  For example, we don’t always understand our feelings in the moment, but if we let go of needing to know why, then the understanding flows.

So today I commit to practicing The Art of Not Knowing, which means that I fully step into the wide, open space of the unknown with the intention of learning, playing, and discovering.

Wow! This is sooooooooo much better than beating myself up with needs and have-to’s.  I invite you to give it a whirl too.  Come on, you know it sounds enticing…

God, what’s up with the human need to be productive?

Each morning I check in with God through Active Meditation.  It begins with my Daily Journaling Practice, walking my dog, stretching out, working out for 35 minutes, and then I sit down and type out my conversation with God.  It’s a powerful process and so I thought I would share with you yesterday’s notes:

Me: Good morning, God!

God: Good morning.

Me: I come to you today with an open heart and mind.  I don’t have an agenda or anything in particular in mind.

God: Sweet.

Me: So I’m here to check in with you.  What would you like me to focus on today?

God: I love how you are already focusing on joy.  I saw that you realized how much easier it was to work out {at the gym} when your mind and heart were filled with joy.

Me: yes, I loved it.  In fact, there were times when I thought, “This is supposed to be harder!” and then I just let it go and continued on with my easy workout.

God: Good for you.  It is important {for you to understand} that life was not designed to be hard and difficult.  It was designed to require hard work.  And yet, enjoyable work.  Work that is challenging and energizing all at the same time.

Me: oh I like that!  It takes some of the pressure off.  Speaking of pressure, what’s up with the human need to be productive all the time?

God: Ah yes, the need to be productive.  It’s more about panic as opposed to productivity isn’t it?

Me: yes!  Because I have noticed that it is easier to be productive when I don’t need to be productive.

God: yes!  That is the key.  Notice the difference between what you say is the driving force and what truly is the driving force.  This is where a lot of humans run into trouble in creating their lives.  They say one thing with their mouths and something different with their hearts.

Me: oh wow!  That’s insightful.  Thank you!

God: you’re welcome.

Me: okay, I need to go get ready for me day.

God: I thought that’s what we were doing!

Me: you’re funny, God!  I mean that I need to go shower and get ready for my next appointment.

God: well, thank you for making me one of your first appointments of the day!

Me: you’re welcome! Anything else you’d like to say before I sign off?

God: Nope. Be a joyful day!

Me: thank you.

God: you’re so very welcome.

Request for Your Advice

Gracie & Me
Gracie & Me

It feels like the last 2 weeks were swallowed in one big gulp.

Have you ever had a Big Gulp from 7-11? I just drank one on a road trip I took with my husband up to Cache Creek for a white water rafting trip where I was tossed out of our raft multiple times and sent floating down the rapids with only my water shoes and life jacket (um – I just skipped back to read this paragraph and I must add that I also had my bikini on :~) Yeah, I’m bruised and scraped, but alive and all my limbs in tact. Whew!

But anyhow, I think I’ve been MIA because I go through these cycles where I put myself out there to the extreme and then I have to hide and recharge. And the cycle isn’t so much about what I’m doing (i.e. blogging). It’s more about the amount of pressure I put on myself. You see, I have this nasty habit of holding myself to super high standards – nothing short of perfection of course. And it’s so god damned debilitating. It’s like I ping pong from one extreme to the other: fully exposed and completely hidden.

It would be nice to find a balance.

But, more importantly, it would be nice to let go of the perfection pressure. So I’d like to here from you. How do you process perfectionism? How do you balance putting yourself out there without getting completely drained? What do you do to release the pressure of parenting, work, family, etc.? Please share your wisdom and experience with me. I need it.

*photo note: I always like seeing photos of the bloggers I visit so I thought I would post a new photo of me and Gracie that my husband Will took.
